How to avoid the intrusion of characters whose intend is to publish spam or inappropriate contents on blogs and forums ?

Trust me, I'm trying to figure that out myself. I had been using Mollom, now moving to a more semantic oriented captcha called egglue. This has caused more than a few hours of frustration as I've deleted bogus user accounts out of the system.
